WHS golf team 10-8 on season

NORTH HAMPTON ? The Winnacunnet High School boys golf team sits at 10-8 after defeating a couple of Seacoast-area rivals and nearly upsetting two of the top three teams in Division I.

First the Warriors earned wins over Division I rivals Dover and Spaulding in a three-team match at Sagamore-Hampton Golf Club. The Warriors combined to shoot 206 on Sagamore's back nine, and were led by Kris Saba's 39. Tyler Whitten and Chris Saunders each shot 41 for the Warriors.

Winnacunnet faced Division I powers Bedford and Bishop Guertin, as well as Salem, on the road and finished 1-2. Bedford led the way at 203, followed by Guertin (211), Winnacunnet (216) and Salem (240).


Seacoast United Junior Academy Program

Tryout dates for the Seacoast United Soccer Club's Junior Academy Program, for children aged 7-14, will take place Sept. 26-27 from 4:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the Epping fields.

Portsmouth 5K Run for the Kids

PORTSMOUTH ? The Community Child Care Center's 5K Run for the Kids and the annual Seacoast Wellness Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Community Campus in Portsmouth, just off of West Road.

Activities include first aid and CPR (non-certificate) training, exercise demonstrations and activities, free screenings, a story walk for young children and programs on healthy cooking and eating.

Portsmouth basketball leagues forming

Two adult basketball leagues are beginning play in Portsmouth next month.

The City League is for men who are at least 18-years-old and out of high school. Games are played on Monday and Thursday nights at the Spinnaker Point Fitness Center gym. First-year players to the league are required to attend an organizational night on Monday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.

Registration will begin on Monday, Oct. 15. The fee is $80 for Portsmouth residents and $160 for non-residents.

The Men's 35-and-Over League is for men who are at least 35 years old. Games will be played on Wednesday nights. First-year players to the league will be required to attend an organizational night on Monday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Registration will begin Monday, Oct. 8, and the fee is $80 for Portsmouth residents and $160 for non-residents.

Youth Soccer Challenge in Exeter

The Exeter Knights of Columbus, Council No. 2179, will be holding a Youth Soccer Challenge on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Exeter Parks & Recreation fields at 32 Court Street.

The event, open for boys and girls between the ages of 10-14, will be held at 2 p.m.

Register on the day of the event at the field.


York wrestling club taking registrations

The Hammerhead Wrestling Club, based in York, is accepting registrations for its fall wrestling sessions. All youth in grades K-12 are eligible to participate, regardless of town of residence. Sign-ups are ongoing through Oct. 1 and sessions start Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Hammerhead Wrestling Systems seeks to provide instruction in all areas of amateur folk style and freestyle wrestling, to prepare athletes for success in the sport of wrestling. This is to be achieved through a proprietary instructional and belt-level system. Open to wrestlers ages 6-18, this program is being held in conjunction with the York Parks and Recreation Department. Each session is open to all area wrestlers regardless of town of residence and will run eight weeks in the fall, winter and spring.

TrueChampion offers fall basketball training

TrueChampion, in cooperation with the Portsmouth Recreation Department, is offering a Fall Basketball Training program from Oct. 6 through Dec. 22. This is a co-ed program for kids in grades 4-8, with players broken into divisions by ability. Players will meet twice a week with days depending on division placement.

The program, which will include practices and scrimmage games, will focus on improving fundamental skills. It is held at the Community Campus on Sherburne Road in Portsmouth. Cost is $240 (includes reversible jersey) with a discount for additional siblings.

Coaches and trainers will use the first week to evaluate athletes and assign each player to a division that maximizes individual improvement.

Kittery men's basketball league

Kittery Recreation is offering a new men's basketball league. The seven-week schedule will be followed by single-elimination playoffs. Games are played on Wednesday nights. Players must be at least 18 years old and out of high school to join. Team captains are needed for each team. All games played at the Kittery Community Center Gymnasium.

Registration is open until Oct. 5 and is limited to 80 players. It is $65 for residents and $75 for non-residents. Play begins Oct. 24.

Sign-ups for Hampton K-2 Sports

HAMPTON ? The Hampton Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for this year's K-2 Sports program at the recreation office, located at 100 Winnacunnet Road in Hampton.

Led by instructor Jacqui Graham, K-2 Sports is open to students in kindergarten through second grade. Participants can be signed up for either the Tuesday or the Thursday session, and both sessions take place after school from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at the Centre School gymnasium.

The first session, which runs from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30 on Tuesdays and Sept. 27 through Nov. 1 on Thursdays, will feature soccer in a fun, non-competitive environment. Upcoming sessions include basketball, pillow polo, indoor sports and outdoor sports.

Annual Lincoln Akerman golf tourney set for Sept. 28

HAMPTON FALLS ? The eighth annual Lincoln Akerman School golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28 at Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the four-person scramble format starting at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $100 per person, which includes golf, cart, bottled water, tee-gift, lunch, and a continental breakfast catered by Grill 28. There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 cash raffle. Other contests will include longest drive, closest to pin, putting contests and a par-3 hole-in-one contest.

Project Safety 5K on Sept. 29

The Project Safety 5K and Family Fun run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Portsmouth High School. The competitive race begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Family Costumed Fun Run takes place immediately following.

Turkey Trot registration open

Registration for the Seacoast Rotary Club's fourth annual Turkey Trot 5K is open at www.seacoastrotary.org

Held each year on Thanksgiving morning, the Turkey Trot provides a fun and relaxed race for individuals, families and walkers. Part of the Portsmouth Community Road Race Series, the 3.1-mile race starts at Peirce Island and finishes at Strawbery Banke. This year's race will be capped at 3,000 registrants and registration will close on Nov. 18.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division as well as for the best costume.
