Holly Madison Bikini Photos: THG Hot Bodies Countdown #97!

THG is counting down the 100 Hottest Bikini Bodies of 2012.

From now until the end of the year, we'll be paying tribute to the hottest of the hot with bikini photos galore. The competition is guaranteed to be sweltering.

Candice Swanepoel bikini pictures were honored on Wednesday. Keeping the countdown rolling at #97: Playboy staple and expectant mom Holly Madison!

Holly Madison Bikini Photograph

It's been a wild ride for Holly in the past five or six years.

When we first got to know the Girls Next Door star, she was Hugh Hefner's #1 squeeze and dying to have a baby with the bathrobe-loving octogenarian.

Then they broke up, and her career kinda went downhill, but she's had her share of successful, bikini-donning ventures ... and now she's pregnant!

The father-to-be is Pasquale Rotella, who's facing a possible 13 years in prison on bribery, conspiracy and embezzlement charges, which he denies.

Hope that works out. Click to enlarge some vintage Holly Madison pictures below, and check back tomorrow to see THG's Hottest Bikini Body #96 ...

Why it is important for a small business to have human resources ...

The small business owner needs to consider taking small business HR training courses in order to be able to handle the many functions required by the business. The human resources development is a vital part of business operations. The fact that the business only has one employee means that this person is involved with the development of the business, profits, advertising and marketing which is a major part of the human resource department.

What are Human Resources?

The HR department consists of many different tasks that are important in helping to operate the business. The first most important asset is human capital. The larger corporations usually have multiple employees to carry out the functions of the department; however, the small business owner must rely on one or two people. In most cases it is the owner who is carryout the functions of the department. The person who functions in the human resource department is often the director, manager, analyst, in charge of employment compensation and the manager over the benefits for the employees.

These are just some of the functions required of the human resource department but in a small business all one person does the tasks, which is usually the owner. That is why it is advisable for the owner to take small business HR training. The special training will enable the owner to perform all of the required duties of the human resource department. The human resource person must recruit and train new employees. The small business needs to hire employees that can be versatile in doing many different functions.

The employees must know the policies and procedures of the small business because often they are called upon to handle situations when the owner is away. It is important to hire the right employees to prevent a high turnover rate, which causes an extra expense in training etc. The hiring of well-qualified employees saves the HR department extra work and it is helpful in providing better benefits. There are a number of training courses available to help the owner handle the many different functions of the department.

What Training Is Available?

The business owner can take courses to help them with the business functions, legal courses, and courses that help with the foundation of operations. The introduction courses are a great place to start then the owner can take other courses to help them with other important functions like payroll, benefits, recruiting, hiring, training, disciplinary action and termination of the employee. The business owner may want to take specialty courses that give them the opportunity to focus on the area that they need the most for the operation of their business.

The business owner may want to focus on such things as the HR law, workplace safety, job descriptions, and training handbooks. It is important to know about compensation record keeping and performance management. These are all specialty courses made available for the small business owner. Today thanks to modern technology, the small business owner can take these courses over the internet making it much easier to do since they can take the courses in their own time.

The ability to know how to do human resources management is a vital part of running a small business. That is why Human resources training programs give the business owner the advantage of learning how effectively operate their business.

Coral scientists use new model to find where corals are most likely to survive climate change

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Marine conservationists from the Wildlife Conservation Society working with other coral reef experts have identified heat-tolerant coral species living in locations with continuous background temperature variability as those having the best chance of surviving climate change, according to a new simplified method for measuring coral reef resilience.

Therefore, coral reefs with these characteristics should receive immediate attention for conserving this highly threatened ecosystem, according to the authors of a study appearing August 30 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

The bewildering diversity of coral reef environments has made assessing and prioritizing them costly, and yet they require immediate action to respond to the threats of climate change. Combining expert opinion and scientific evidence, the scientists developed a simplified assessment that reduces this complexity to 11 key and easily measured factors. This finding greatly simplifies and reduces the time needed for assessments and, therefore, gives coral reef managers a cost-effective, evidence-based tool for gauging a reef's chances of survival.

"Coral reefs are astoundingly complex systems," said Dr. Tim McClanahan, lead author of the study and head of WCS's coral reef research and conservation program. "This reality sometimes leads to the assumption that evaluations and management strategies must also be complex. Our study reveals, however, that effective conservation decisions may hinge on a few easily measurable factors, and this can promote faster management actions."

The study streamlines a previous approach to measuring the resilience of coral reefs by squaring a currently used assessment models with expert opinions and existing data sets. Focusing on a comprehensive field study undertaken by WCS in Karimunjawa Marine Park, located on the coast of Java in Indonesia, McClanahan and his co-authors examined a previously employed complex and expensive assessment protocol that included over 60 factors -- herbivorous fish diversity, bio-erosion rates, hard coral cover, and many others -- in order to determine which factors were most important.

Using a filtering methodology using surveys and scientific literature, the research team winnowed the list to 11 easily measured factors. Among these, the most important factors favoring resilience are heat-resistant coral species and background temperature variability.

The researchers than used the data collected in the previous comprehensive survey of Karimunjawa Marine Park and reassessed it with the new model. The priorities reached were not the same as the first assessment, which suggested that largely unimportant factors biased the selection of sites in the first assessment while increasing the costs of the investigation.

While the new model offers a potentially valuable, cost-effective tool in ranking the resilience of coral reef systems, McClanahan said that further research is needed to evaluate the priority and types of heat-resistant corals and temperature variability needed for conservation planning. He added that one of the more exciting outputs was that the study prioritized future investigations by identifying factors that are least agreed on among scientists and that have the highest potential to promote the resilience of coral reefs.

"This method gives us a foundation for what could become an indispensible assessment tool for identifying conservation priorities," added McClanahan. "We suspect this protocol will drive investigations for the next decade."

Martin Bickman on the Needless War Between Traditionalists and

Some blog followers might be interested in a recent discussion-list post ?Martin Bickman on the Needless War Between Traditionalists and Progressives? [Hake (2012)]. The abstract reads:

**************************************************
ABSTRACT: University of Colorado English Professor Martin Bickman at his website http://bit.ly/MUXUgx states (paraphrasing): ?While my book Minding American Education [Bickman (2003)], see http://bit.ly/OSYLdc, won a national academic award, I soon discovered that meaningful educational change happens primarily at the local levels, working student to student and teacher to teacher.?

Bickman drew from his book in a piece in the Los Angeles Times which he had meaningfully titled ?The Needless War Between Traditionalists And Progressives And How To End It,? but which was changed by an editor to the snappy but senseless ?Won't You Come Home John Dewey?? [Bickman (2004) at http://bit.ly/OF7DWF - scroll to the APPENDIX]. Therein Bickman wrote [paraphrased for brevity; bracketed by lines ?bbbbb. . . . .?):

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
One of the reasons this continuing conflict between traditionalists and progressives is so heartbreaking is that, around the turn of the last century, John Dewey was able to create resolutions both in a philosophic and practical sense. He looked out on an educational landscape torn between similar apparently competing philosophies:

(a) that centered on the notion of ?child-study? and the person of G. Stanley Hall http://bit.ly/NBfLEK, with a Rousseau-like sentimentality about nature and children, more concerned with what it saw as health and wholeness than with intellectual growth; and

(b) that centered on high academic achievement as defined and organized by curricula and textbooks, led by William Torrey Harris http://bit.ly/OoqXag, more concerned with the standard curriculum - arithmetic, geography, history, grammar and literature - the ?five windows of the soul,? as Harris called them - that rescued the young mind from its immediate narrowness.

Instead of enlisting on one side or the other, Dewey in a crucial 1902 article, ?The Child and the Curriculum? at http://bit.ly/QsVuHi, conceptualized each position so that it would no longer seem a matter of the child versus the curriculum. [My italics.]

?Education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.. . . .[[page 434]]. . . . [It does not mean, as it is often misunderstood,] that we have no choice save either to leave the child to his own unguided spontaneity or to inspire direction upon him from without. But [it recognizes] that no such thing as. . . . . insertion of truth from without is possible. All depends upon the activity which the mind itself undergoes in responding to what is presented from without.. . . . [[page 357]]. . . .?
- John Dewey (1974) - as quoted by Ansbacher (2000)

?. . . .there are several ways to distinguish those who advocate a concept-driven reform curriculum from those who remain defenders of a skills-oriented traditional curriculum. . . . . .They represent different value systems. I believe that rational, reflective discussion and exploration of these issues can bring the two sides closer together. . . . . . . I am told that California schools educate one-seventh of the students in this country. There is too much at stake to continue the fighting, to take a chance on sacrificing the mathematical education of our children by not reaching some agreement on what that education should be.?
- Judith Sowder (1998)

?An exclusive focus on basics leaves students without the understandings that enable them to use effectively. A focus on 'process' without attention to skills deprives students of the tools they need for fluid, competent performance. The extremes are untenable. So, why have so many people taken extreme positions, and why are things as polarized as they are? More important, what might be done about it?. . . . . . . I remain convinced that there is a large middle ground. . . . . . .One way to reclaim the middle ground, suggested by Phil Daro (2007), is to define it clearly-to specify a set of propositions that will call for some degree of compromise from reformers and traditionalists alike. That middle ground would be broadly encompassing, containing propositions that most people would find reasonable (or at least livable). The short-term goal . . . must be to capture the middle ground for the majority. Efforts must be made publicly to identify the extremists for what they are and to marginalize them. The math wars have casualties-our children, who do not receive the kind of robust mathematics education they should.?

Sharp reports 2,000 job cuts in Japan, more changes expected

Sharp reports 2,000 job cuts in Japan, more changes expected

There was little doubt jobs would be on the line after Sharp's significant Q1 losses, but now it's official. Following a board meeting today, the company has joined the likes of RIM, Sony and HP, announcing the "voluntary retirement" of around 2,000 staff in Japan before the year's out. The layoffs are part of a wider, textbook reorganization plan, and are expected to cost a sizeable 27 billion yen (approximately $344 million). Neither figure is set in stone, however, so when everything is finalized we could see more jobs impacted and those costs soar. Whether this puts off potential investment from Hon Hai Precision Industry is unknown, but while Sharp's TVs get ever bigger, its wallet continues to get thinner.

Ban of Circumcision in Germany Stirs Uproar ... - Morocco World News

By Omar Bihmidine

Morocco World News

Sidi Ifni, August 27, 2012

In the midst of the intolerance that has been sweeping across Europe, Germany has decided to ban circumcision after a rabbi was caught red-handed performing it.

Charges were immediately directed against the rabbi at a regional court in Cologne on the alleged grounds that the practice of circumcision doesn?t fit the culture of Germans whatsoever.

This decision on the part of the German government, which encroaches on one?s religious freedoms, has brought about anger and controversy among the Jewish and Muslim communities, not only in Germany, but also all over the world.

Upon this ban, many religious freedom activists expressed their support for German Jews and Muslims and went on to accuse Germany of trespassing and ?breaking? the values of religious tolerance.

According to Rabbi Josh Spinner, CEO of The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, banning circumcision may sooner or later lead to unsteady relations between Jews and the German political body.

As the Jews? and Muslims? calls about religious intolerance in Germany grows more intense, the German authorities are now trapped in a dilemma, not knowing whether to ban circumcision unimpeded or to abide by one of the universally-agreed values for peace, which is religious intolerance.

Irrespective of the reasons, the German authorities may base their ban on concerns over hygiene and medical health, German Jews and Muslims still maintain their stance and may decide to take to the street to restore their potentially confiscated religious rites at any cost.

What is of paramount importance for German Jews and Muslims is that circumcision is an integral part of their religious practice, and its banning, for them, will get the German government nowhere.

Sleep learning is possible: Associations formed when asleep remained intact when awake

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing August 26 in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone -- even when no odor is present -- both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv -- Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed -- namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas -- including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning -- even for a moment -- disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor -- either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present -- by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone -- with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones -- those associated with bad smells -- provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" -- which makes us forget most of our dreams -- may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie -- what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

WOMEN in RECOVERY - Women For Sobriety, Inc.

We are pleased to share with the Women of our World: Women For Sobriety, Inc. (WFS), and ?in the spirit of FREE THINKING, has opted to share an alternative PROGRAM for Women, with addiction challenges. The following program is designed for any use, including alcohol addiction; as well as other issues.

Women For Sobriety, Inc. (WFS), is a non-profit secular addiction recovery group for alcoholic women.

WFS was created by sociologist Jean Kirkpatrick in 1976 as an alternative to twelve-step addiction recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). As of 1998 there were more than 200 WFS groups worldwide.

Only women are allowed to attend the organization?s meetings as the groups focus specifically on women?s issues. WFS is not a radical feminist, anti-male, or anti-AA organization.?

History

Jean Kirkpatrick attended AA meetings for three years and was unable to maintain sobriety. The methods of what is now the ?New Life? program of Women For Sobriety empowered Kirkpatrick to quit drinking. Discovered through trial and error, the New Life methods are based largely on the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson (particularly his essay, Self-Reliance) and the Unity Movement of New Thought in addition to Kirkpatrick?s personal experience, knowledge of sociology, and experience in AA.In her design, as in AA, WFS encourages the open and hosting sharing but focuses on improving self-esteem and reducing guilt rather than admitting powerlessness. While Kirkpatrick?s program stresses spirituality as the ?fundamental object of life? the solution to alcoholism is described as being within the mind of the female alcoholic, not requiring a Higher Power. Also like AA, Kirkpatrick?s program encourages complete abstinence from alcohol, rather than harm reduction.

Program

The program is built on thirteen affirmations encouraging members to change their self-image and world view. As is practiced in SMART Recovery, WFS members avoid labeling themselves as alcoholics and addicts. Philosophically, these ideas are close to modernity, emphasizing self-control and rationality. As described in WFS literature, the fundamental problem of female alcoholics is low self-esteem, a condition that is culturally reinforced in women more than in men, necessitating a qualitatively different treatment for women. In WFS members focus on responsibility rather than powerlessness, on self-esteem rather than humility and on thinking rather than surrender. Like AA, WFS encourages meditation and spirituality, although sobriety is not viewed as dependent on a Higher Power. To increase self-esteem, WFS encourages positive thinking and discourages negative thinking (a cause of low self-esteem).

In WFS language, ?faulty thinking? causes destructive behavior, consequently WFS teaches its members that they have the power to change their thinking to change their actions. The WFS approach, in this sense, is similar to ?cognitive behavioral therapy?.

Newcomers are encouraged to take pride in their accomplishments, no matter how small?even in an hour of sobriety. Similarly, members learn to beware of negative thoughts as they arise. There are also elements of applied self-in-relation theory (the theory that a woman?s sense of definition and value is strongly tied to their relationships with others); women are encouraged to build new, healthy relationships inside and outside of meetings.

Affirmations

The thirteen affirmations represent six levels of growth in which members accept the physical nature of alcoholism (affirmation one), remove negativity (affirmations two, four and nine), learn to think better of themselves (affirmations five and twelve), change their attitudes (affirmations three, six and eleven), improve their relationships (affirmations seven and ten), and change their life?s priorities (affirmations eight and thirteen).

  • I have a life threatening problem that once had me.
  • Negative thoughts destroy only myself.
  • Happiness is a habit I will develop.
  • Problems bother me only to the degree I permit them to.
  • I am what I think.
  • Life can be ordinary, or it can be great.
  • Love can change the course of my world.
  • The fundamental object of life is emotional and spiritual growth.
  • The past is gone forever.
  • All love given returns.
  • Enthusiasm is my daily exercise.
  • I am a competent woman and have much to give life.
  • I am responsible for myself and my actions.

The First, Second, Tenth, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Affirmations were changed at some point in the 1990s these originally appeared, respectively, as: I have a drinking problem that once had me, Negative emotions destroy only myself, All love given returns twofold, I am a competent woman and have much to give to others, I am responsible for myself and my sisters.?

What We Do:

The activities of WFS are: the establishment of self-help groups, and the distribution of literature to women who ask for our help. Unfunded by any agency, WFS derives its operational money from group donations, sale of literature, speaking engagements, workshops, and outside donations.

Until the founding of WFS, it was assumed that any program for recovery from alcoholism would work equally well for women as for men. When it became obvious that recovery rates for male alcoholics were higher than for females, it was then declared that women were harder to treat and were less cooperative than male alcoholics.

WFS came forth with the belief that women alcoholics require a different kind of program in recovery than the kinds of programs used for male alcoholics.

?The success of the WFS ?New Life? Program has shown this to be true. Although the physiological recovery from alcoholism is the same for both sexes, the psychological (emotional) needs for women are very different in recovery from those of the male alcoholic.

The ?New Life? Program is directed to these specific needsof the woman alcoholic in recovery. There are an estimated 7,500,000 women alcoholics in the United States alone. That number of women alcoholics is equal to the

TOTAL population of: Maine, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, New Mexico, and Utah. Surely this large number of women deserve a program that speaks to their specific needs in recovery.

?We know the WFS ?New Life? Program does this. Women For Sobriety has self-help groups throughout the world. In addition WFS produces and distributes booklets and literature written specifically to the needs of women alcoholics. Since WFS started in 1976, the ?New Life? Program has been adapted for other addictions. In addition many men have requested the Program and Men For Sobriety groups beginning in the United States and Canada.

Fresh Ideas And Tips For Home Improvement Projects ...

Use family members and friends as great aids in your home improvement projects. With family and friends, you can cut the need for help from a professional that could cost quite a bit, while you also get a great deal of fun from the project. Also, you will find that they come in handy in the clean up portion of the project.

Don?t throw out left over wallpaper! Instead use it to add color and pattern to your home. You can cover a whole headboard in a bold print to make a big statement. Or, use smaller pieces for the recessed areas of doors or cabinets. Paste scraps in a patchwork pattern on wall or door trim for a great border effect. Be creative and thrifty by using wallpaper leftovers in your projects.

Some home improvement projects are best suited for a group of people. By enlisting the help of the whole family, much more work can be done than would have been accomplished by one person. Neighbors or other friends can even be recruited, in return for the promise of future help from you.

Replace old and outdated sliding glass patio doors with french doors. The look is bold and modern, something that new buyers will really appreciate. It?s the kind of small touch that is quick, easy, and inexpensive but will give you the most bang for your hard earn buck.

There are a few electrical tasks that a non-expert can do around the home. One is replacing a light switch. After you turn off the electricity and remove the cover plate, detach the wires on the old switch and replace them in the same order on the new switch.

When renovating your home, you should always stay close to the home?s original character. If your street is lined with Victorian-era tudors and you choose to turn your home into a glass-fronted homage to modern architecture, it will stick out uncomfortably and annoy your neighbors. Also, the more you differ from the home?s original structure, the higher the cost of the renovation and the less your chance of getting a return on investment.

Make sure that your contractor is filing for and receiving the permits needed to make home improvements. This requires that you double check his paperwork and go to your city to find out if he?s filed for the permits. A good contractor will provide you a record of his actions without you even having to ask for it.

Open up the curtains and blinds during a showing to allow natural light into the home. If the outdoor scenery is not desirable, consider keeping the blinds somewhat closed to draw less attention to it. Turn on all of the lights in the home so the home looks bright and cheery instead of dark and dreary.

If you have extra paint left over from a recent project, store it in a glass jar rather than leaving it in the paint can. You will be able to instantly tell what the color is without going through the messy ordeal of opening the lid of the paint can.

While it is always nice to have a larger home with more than enough room, it is not a good idea to buy a house that has much more space than you really need. You will only end up paying a lot of money on heating costs for space you do not even use.

To improve the look of the exterior of your home without breaking the bank, give your garage door an update. Frequently, the garage is one of the biggest elements of your home that people can see from afar. You can create a fresh new look for only a few hundred dollars by simply installing a new garage door.

The above tips are meant to be a helpful tool on your journey to home improvement success. Home improvement skills are a wonderful tool in any home owner?s toolbox. Taking care of small jobs now, can avoid costly, larger breakdowns later. Take back your property with your new knowledge of home improvement!

Colorado State Chancellor Michael Martin shares his path from first-generation student to university representative ( Collegian )

By Kate Simmons
August 23, 2012
| Updated on: August 22, 2012

CSU System Chancellor Michael Martin might have worked in a mine.

The newly-appointed face of the three-campus CSU system spent his young years in the small, rural town Crosby, Minn. where many of his peers did not pursue higher education.

But Martin, with the support of his parents, decided to go to a four-year college, becoming the only one of his siblings to do so.

?My family was very encouraging, not because they knew about it personally, but they understood that I could stay back in Crosby, Minn. and probably join many of my peers in working in the mines, but that was not a future that my parents thought was in my best interest or theirs,? Martin said.

Martin, the former chancellor at Louisiana State University, took over as CSU?s chancellor over the summer. Martin has spent the last few months getting acquainted with Colorado and is excited about being a part of the university.

?Mike understands the big issues and he?s very ready to dig into those and get to work and get the job done,? said CSU President Tony Frank. ?There is never any hesitancy on his part to role up his sleeves and get to work.?

According to Frank, Martin?s job is to handle interactions with the Board of Governors ? the 15-member council that oversees the CSU System ? the state legislature, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and to represent CSU at a variety of events in Denver.

?Having someone focused on all of those areas is really important,? Frank said. ?I think Mike will be a leading voice within Colorado about the importance of sustaining public higher education.?

Martin said he is aware of his responsibilities and goes to work every day ready to remind decision-makers to remember our student body when they are making decisions that will affect CSU students.

?I won?t be able to directly influence students anymore because I?m here in Denver ? but I hope I can influence the people who do,? he said. ?I hope in that process I can make them continually better servants of the notion that it?s always about the students.?

In his time as a university president or chancellor, Martin has developed two rules he takes with him to work every day.

?No. 1: it?s always about what?s best for the students. No. 2: everyone on campus is important. From professors to the people who mow the lawn, they all serve the students so they?re all important,? Martin said.

?It?s very easy in these jobs to get caught up too often in your own ego because people call you ?chancellor? and think that?s important,? Martin said. ?That?s only important if you can use whatever that is to advance the best interest of the students. It?s never about me.?

Chancellor Martin said he hopes to make each of the CSU System?s three campuses ? in Fort Collins, Pueblo and online ? more successful by connecting them and utilizing their individual resources.

?One of the things I think a chancellor can do is be the person who helps think through those cross-campus relationships and remove the barriers that would prevent that from occurring,? he said. ?Part of that, it seems to me, is to be the cheerleader and the innovator for relationships which cause the three campuses to be more mutually supportive of one another.?

But Martin isn?t a complete newcomer to CSU. A decade ago, he was considered for the vacant president position at the university. As one of two finalists, Martin chose not to continue on in the process.

?At that time, I still hadn?t concluded that I was ready to lead a major university,?
Martin said. ?My ego wanted me to do it but my rational thought process said maybe a couple more years? I didn?t see myself ready to take it on. Ten years later and a couple jobs in between later, I think I am.?

Larry Penley, the other finalist, took the job instead and resigned years later amidst a chorus of critique over his job performance.

At his previous job as chancellor of Louisiana State University, Martin faced budget reductions and had to figure out how to keep a campus prosperous despite those reductions. CSU has experienced similar budget cuts and a tuition hike in response to Colorado?s state government budget cuts.

From what Martin has observed, lawmakers are supportive of higher education and his job is to work with them as the face of CSU.

?In general, the populace and the state leadership (in Colorado) deeply regret having to make those cuts and as a consequence there is a fundamental, intrinsic value they have placed for higher education and CSU in particular,? Martin said.

?I?m not sure if that was the case in Louisiana. Many people love LSU deeply but the broader population and the state leadership, I don?t believe had quite the same commitment to higher education as Colorado does.?

Martin explained that with Colorado being in the top five states whose population has bachelor?s degrees, most of the state?s citizens believe in and have witnessed the value of higher education.

?Even during budget cut times it?s nice to know that the citizenry and representatives and the leaders of the state still value what universities do and that gives you a chance to feel as though, when the economy turns, enthusiasm for investing in higher education will endure,? Martin said.

?I think as this economy turns around, even if we don?t see a huge uptake in funding, I don?t think you?ll see continued reductions,? he said. ?My sense is that there?s a stronger conviction to fix it here than there is other places and I hope that that shows.?

Martin said he would not have graduated college without state subsidies.
?During my growing up years, the state of Minnesota subsidized my education at a very high level,? Martin said. ?My home state of Minnesota has always been a very strong supporter of higher education. I would not be here were it not.?

His father graduated high school and worked as a diesel mechanic in mines. His mother didn?t graduate from high school but became the mayor of their small rural town.

?It was clear to them (his parents, that) education was the only way in which the next generation was going to advance over where they started,? Martin said.

Martin is the only one of his siblings who attended a four-year college. One of his brothers is a mailman in rural Minnesota and the other manages five little radio stations.

Both of Martin?s children have gone on to pursue higher education. His daughter, Amanda, attended the University of Wisconsin and his son, Sam, went to the University of Minnesota and went on to get a second degree at Sarah Lawrence College. Currently, Sam is completing his second Master?s degree.

?I don?t think you have to have been a parent to be a university leader or a great university citizen, but in my case it helped a great deal,? Martin said.

?I literally was the dad who moved my daughter into the residence hall and didn?t want to be seen crying in the hallway,? Martin said. ??. I had to disguise my angst of my daughter leaving home.?

Martin?s son attended the University of Minnesota while he was there as dean of the institution and, as Martin admits, might have used his father?s status to his advantage.

?He, on more than one occasion, I discovered, had taken my all-access parking pass out of my car and was using it himself, so I had to threaten to have university police arrest him despite the fact that he was my son,? Martin said.

Coming to Colorado to join the CSU team is a transition, but Martin said he is ready to do all he can to continue the advancing CSU?s progress.

?I?ve always felt that Colorado State and the Colorado State system has been ahead of the national curve in several important areas and I think it can continue to do that,? Martin said.
