Mundial Montreal, a music conference and festival showcasing the Canadian world music scene, begins its second edition Nov. 13 with a 50 per cent increase in the number of industry professionals signed up to participate, the festival recently announced.
The four-day event offers a busy schedule of networking events and live music, spread across several locations. This year, 33 artists will perform at 10 different venues, including Cabaret du Mile End, L?Astral, Club Balattou and Caf? Campus. More than 150 delegates, both Canadian and from outside the country, are expected to attend. Programmers, labels, industry representatives and journalists are among the participants.
An opening-night bash at SAT, 1201 St. Laurent Blvd., will feature music from Quebec and Louisiana. The Soul Rebels and Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole will share the stage with homegrown artists C?cile Doo-Kingu?, Canailles and Marco Calliari.
Other artists on the festival schedule include Elisapie, Socalled, MAZ, Joaquin Diaz, Delhi 2 Dublin, Charly Yapo, Heavy Soundz, Paul Kunigis, Sultans of String and Nomadic Massive. Both Harry Manx and Kid Koala ? who presents an event called the Space Cadet Headphone Experience ? will appear in private showcases open to some badgeholders. Most sets in the festival are condensed and some showcases are free.
Participants are also invited to attend exchanges about touring strategies, the challenge of borders and how world music fits in with the digital world. A speed schmoozing option offers networking opportunities and information for industry delegates.
