More omnivore dilemmas: Seasonal diet changes can cause reproductive stress in primates

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? When seasonal changes affect food availability, omnivores like blue monkeys adapt by changing their diets, but such nutritional changes may impact female reproduction, according to research published November 28 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Steffen Foerster from Barnard College, and colleagues from Columbia University and the Smithsonian Institution.

The authors found that levels of fecal glucocorticoids (fGC), a stress marker, increased when female monkeys shifted their diet towards lower quality fallback foods, whereas the levels decreased when the monkeys had access to preferred foods like insects, fruits and young leaves.

They also found that lactating females and those in the later stages of pregnancy showed greater increases in the stress marker than females who were not in these stages of reproduction. According to the authors, their results suggest that these seasonal changes in food availability may affect inter-birth intervals in these primates, and also affect the timing of infant independence from mothers.

Foerster adds, ""While it was interesting to find that even subtle changes in dietary composition may have strong effects on female reproductive decisions, it is equally noteworthy that social stress was almost entirely absent from blue monkey societies. Our study makes the point that integrating behavioral, ecological, and hormonal measures can reveal adaptive behavioral and reproductive strategies that would otherwise be difficult to discern."

University Of Minnesota Duluth Students Appear In Blackface, Repeat Racist Stereotypes In Video

In a controversial video, two young women, one of whom currently attends the University of Minnesota Duluth, mug for the camera in blackface, spewing racist stereotypes and racial epithets.

"We true Negroes," the women say, laughing, "We come from the black hood."

University officials, however, did not find the YouTube clip funny in the slightest. When the clip first came to their attention in mid-November, they issued a campus-wide email statement, calling the women's actions "unacceptable behavior for anyone," according to UMD student newspaper The Statesman.

Last week, the paper tracked down the women from the video and identified them as Rachel Cooper and Jessica Heid. When contacted by the paper, both women emailed apologies.

?We were doing facials and it happened to have been a brown facial mask,? Cooper wrote. ?We had to leave it on for 12 minutes. During that 12 minutes, we horribly decided to make a video that we regret and are not happy about. This was made over a year ago.?

According to the school's website, 8 percent of the 11,491 UMD students enrolled this fall are of color.

The university has struggled with racism in the past, according to the Duluth News Tribune. Officals have been working to unite the campus following a 2010 scandal involving racial slurs written by white students on Facebook.

The city of Duluth, too, has struggled with prior racially charged incidents. Earlier in November, an effigy of President Barack Obama was hung from a prominent Duluth billboard, Minnesota Public Radio reports.

"If there were competition to be Minnesota's most racist city, Duluth would likely be a heavy favorite," MPR's Bob Collins wrote at the time.

Changes in nerve cells may contribute to the development of mental illness

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Reduced production of myelin, a type of protective nerve fiber that is lost in diseases like multiple sclerosis, may also play a role in the development of mental illness, according to researchers at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The study is published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Myelin is an insulating material that wraps around the axon, the threadlike part of a nerve cell through which the cell sends impulses to other nerve cells. New myelin is produced by nerve cells called oligodendrocytes both during development and in adulthood to repair damage in the brain of people with diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

A new study led by Patrizia Casaccia, MD, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience, Genetics and Genomics; and Neurology at Mount Sinai, determined that depriving mice of social contact reduced myelin production, demonstrating that the formation of new oligodendrocytes is affected by environmental changes. This research provides further support to earlier evidence of abnormal myelin in a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including autism, anxiety, schizophrenia and depression.

"We knew that a lack of social interaction early in life impacted myelination in young animals but were unsure if these changes would persist in adulthood," said Dr. Casaccia, who is also Chief of the Center of Excellence for Myelin Repair at the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Social isolation of adult mice causes behavioral and structural changes in neurons, but this is the first study to show that it causes myelin dysfunction as well."

Dr. Casaccia's team isolated adult mice to determine whether new myelin formation was compromised. After eight weeks, they found that the isolated mice showed signs of social withdrawal. Subsequent brain tissue analyses indicated that the socially isolated mice had lower-than-normal levels of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes in the prefrontal cortex, but not in other areas of the brain. The prefrontal cortex controls complex emotional and cognitive behavior.

The researchers also found changes in chromatin, the packing material for DNA. As a result, the DNA from the new oligodendrocytes was unavailable for gene expression.

After observing the reduction in myelin production in socially-isolated mice, Dr. Casaccia's team then re-introduced these mice into a social group. After four weeks, the social withdrawal symptoms and the gene expression changes were reversed.

"Our study demonstrates that oligodendrocytes generate new myelin as a way to respond to environmental stimuli, and that myelin production is significantly reduced in social isolation," said Dr. Casaccia. "Abnormalities occur in people with psychiatric conditions characterized by social withdrawal. Other disorders characterized by myelin loss, such as MS, often are associated with depression. Our research emphasizes the importance of maintaining a socially stimulating environment in these instances."

At Mount Sinai, Dr. Casaccia's laboratory is studying oligodendrocyte formation to identify therapeutic targets for myelin repair. They are screening newly-developed pharmacological compounds in brain cells from rodents and humans for their ability to form new myelin.

Dr. Casaccia is the recipient of the Neuroscience Javits Award by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, who also funded this research (R37-NS42925-10) along with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Female military members sue to serve in combat

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Four female service members filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging the Pentagon's ban on women serving in combat, hoping the move will add pressure to drop the policy just as officials are gauging the effect that lifting the prohibition will have on morale.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, is the second one this year over the 1994 rule that bars women from being assigned to ground combat units, which are smaller and considered more dangerous since they are often in battle for longer periods.

The legal effort comes less than a year after the ban on gays serving openly was lifted and as officials are surveying Marines about whether women would be a distraction in ground combat units.

"I'm trying to get rid of the ban with a sharp poke," said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jennifer Hunt, who was among the plaintiffs in the latest lawsuit and was injured in 2007 when her Humvee ran over an improvised explosive device in Iraq.

Hunt and the other three women said the policy unfairly blocks them from promotions and other advancements open to men in combat. Three of the women are in the reserves. A fourth, Marine Corp Lt. Colleen Farrell, leaves active duty this week.

Women comprise 14 percent of the 1.4 million active military personnel. The lawsuit alleges that women are barred from 238,000 positions across the Armed Forces.

At a Washington, D.C., news conference, Pentagon press secretary George Little said the Defense Department was making strides in allowing more women into combat. He said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has opened about 14,500 combat positions to women.

"And he has directed the services to explore the possibility of opening additional roles for women in the military," Little said. "His record is very strong on this issue."

American Civil Liberties Union Ariela Migdal, who represents the four women, said Panetta's actions weren't enough. She called for an end to the combat ban. "These tweaks and minor changes on the margins do a disservice to all the women who serve," she said.

"It falls short," she said. "It is not enough."

Marine Corps Capt. Zoe Bedell said she left active duty, in large part, because of the combat exclusion policy. Bedell said she was frustrated that her advancement in the Marines was blocked by her inability to serve directly in combat units.

"The military is the last place where you are allowed to be discriminated against because of you gender," she said.

Bedell said the blurred front lines of modern warfare, with suicide bombs and sniper attacks, have put more and more women in combat situations.

More than 144 female troops have been killed and more than 860 have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan since the wars began, according to Pentagon statistics. Roughly 20,000 of the 205,000 service members currently serving in Afghanistan are women.

Military leaders say they want to make sure lifting gender-based barriers would not disrupt the cohesion of the smaller combat ground units and military operations.

The Marine Corps' top leader, Gen. James Amos, ordered a survey of 53,000 troops to get their views, including whether they believe women in those units would distract male Marines from doing their jobs. The results have not been released yet.

The lawsuit alleges the ban violates constitutional female service members' equal rights. "As a direct result of this policy," the lawsuit states, "women ? as a class and solely because of their gender ? are barred from entire career fields.

The lawsuit also alleges that women are already serving unofficially in combat units.

Air National Guard Major Mary Jennings Hegar sustained shrapnel wounds in 2009 when she exchanged fire on the ground in Afghanistan after her Medevac helicopter was shot down. Both she and Hunt received Purple Heart medals for their injuries.

The lawsuit was assigned to U.S. District Judge Edward Chen, an appointee of President Barack Obama.

Risk aversity visible in the brain

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Some people live their lives by the motto "no risk -- no fun!" and relish risks. Others are clearly more cautious and focus primarily on safety when investing and for other business activities. Scientists from the University of Bonn in cooperation with colleagues from the University of Zurich studied the attitudes towards risk in a group of 56 subjects. They found that in people who preferred safety, certain regions of the brain show a higher level of activation when they are confronted with quite unforeseeable situations. In addition, they do not distinguish as clearly as risk takers whether a situation is more or less risky than expected.

The results have just been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We were especially interested in the link between risk preferences and the brain regions processing this information," says Prof. Dr. Bernd Weber from the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (CENs) at the University of Bonn. First, the researchers tested a total of 56 subjects for their willingness to take risks. "In an economic game, the test subjects had a choice between a secured payout and a lottery," reports Sarah Rudorf from CENs, the study's principal author. Those who showed a strong preference for the lottery in this test were categorized as risk takers. Others preferred the secured payout even if the lottery's odds of winning were clearly better. They were put in the risk-averse group.

In risk-averse individuals, certain regions of the brain are activated more strongly

Then the test subjects played a card game in a brain scanner to study their risk perception. Cards carrying numbers from one to ten were shown on the video glasses in front of their eyes. Each time, two cards were randomly drawn. Before the subjects were shown the cards, they were asked to place bets on whether the second card would have a higher or a lower number than the first one. "The statistical probability for either case to occur is always the same: fifty-fifty," says Prof. Weber. "This is important so that all subjects, whether they are risk takers or not, experience risky situations inside the scanner." They were not able to assess their probability of winning their bet until they saw the first card. Here, the researchers found that in the subjects who tended to avoid risks, two specific regions of the brain were activated more strongly than in those who were willing to take risks. These areas are the ventral striatum and the insular cortex. The ventral striatum reacts both to the probability of winning, as well as to how well an individual can predict the outcome of the bet. The insular cortex is particularly sensitive to the risk a situation carries, and for whether it is higher or lower than anticipated.

Risk seekers adjust their strategy after lucky streaks

Sarah Rudorf summarized the results, "Individuals in whom these regions of the brain are activated at a higher level seem to perceive risks more clearly and assess them as more negative than those who are willing to take risks." Risk-averse individuals seem to overestimate the con?sequences of risk, and they did not distinguish as clearly between situations that turned out to be more or less risky than expected. In contrast, the test subjects who tended to take greater risks also focused their behavior more towards the wins and losses, and more clearly changed their strategy after negative situations.

Study is first to show the neurobiological mechanisms

"This study is the first to show the neurobiological mechanisms of how individual risk preferences determine risk perception," says Prof. Weber. "This also has effects on behavior in the areas of finance and health." In a next step, the researchers want to study the consequences these results have on economic decisions such as in the stock market. "This might even allow improving the advising process for investors with regard to their individual risk behavior," says Prof. Weber. And he considers health another important area. Smokers know that what they do is very dangerous, and yet they smoke. "If we learned more about smokers' attitudes towards risk, we might be able to provide information for developing better anti-smoking campaigns."

Social Media and Marriage - Relationship Solutions

In modern society social media has become an inescapable part of life. From keeping up with high school and college classmates, to networking professional most adults have a Facebook or Twitter account. In October of 2012, Facebook had over 1 billion active accounts users.? With the development of social media comes complexity in romantic relationships; should couples share an account? Should partners have each other?s passwords and unlimited access to each other?s accounts? Is it okay to ?friend? ex-lovers? At what point in a relationship do you change your status from ?single? to ?in a relationship? ?

In order to avoid drama, confusion and hurt it?s essential to have a few ground rules. Rules that you and your partner are informed of and agree upon:

1.) Sharing a Facebook account with your partner- typically this is not the best idea, as it portrays the couple as fused and overly involved. When couples share a FB account it can look like there is a lack of trust between them, that one partner (or both) must absolutely know every detail of the other partner?s communication. Everyone needs a little personal space- it?s healthy and normal, having individual FB accounts shouldn?t be too much space. There are exceptions to this- like when one partner is active duty in the military and the spouse is keeping family/friends posted on things. But these exceptions are few and far between.

2.) Passwords- exist for a reason. They are to protect privacy. If you feel that you need to invade your partner?s privacy to find out who they are talking to or what they are doing when you?re not there, chances are you don?t trust him/her. In that case the healthy thing to do is discuss these feelings with your partner, not spy on them. If you just can?t get rid of the feeling, as him/her to open his account and go through it with you. If there is nothing to hide, then it should not be a problem, and by having him/her present and consenting it?s not a violation of privacy.

3.) Friending Ex?s- it?s not forbidden to friend an ex on FB, however it?s a delicate situation that takes some consideration. Much of whether it?s appropriate or not depends on how the past relationship ended. Was it friendly or bitter? Are there residual feelings there or not? Is maintaining contact with this person important? If the relationship ended in a difficult way with either of you both still having feelings- don?t do it. A good rule of thumb is- if you wouldn?t pick up the phone once a year to see how he/she?s doing or if you wouldn?t send a Christmas card- don?t do it. If contact with the ex is going to jeopardize the security of your relationship- it?s definitely a don?t.

4.) Relationship Status- in the modern day of casual relationships, hooking up and sexual friendships, when do you officially change your FB status? After you?ve had a direct conversation about being committed with the other person. Nobody wants to get online and see that the person they been dating is suddenly ?in a relationship,? without consenting to it first. Before you make it official on FB, make it official in person.

5.) No secrets. This one can?t be stressed enough. When we reconnect with long lost friends or ex?s through FB it can be natural to feel a certain sense of familiarity and comfortability. It?s not a good idea to confide in your ex- that your current boyfriend is disappointing or never says the sweet things your ex used to say. This only complicates matters, and keeps you from addressing the real issues- whatever?s wrong between you and your current partner. If you would not want your boyfriend or girlfriend to read a message between you and your FB friend, don?t send it.

Committed, adult relationships are based on trust and being genuine. With modern technology there is a lot of room for cheating; either physically or emotionally. In order to protect your relationship use the rules above to guide your Social medial persona, you?ll be glad you did.

Samsung's report on Chinese suppliers makes for grim reading, especially between the lines

Samsung's audit of its Chinese suppliers makes for grim reading, especially between the lines

On the face of it, Samsung's latest report on working conditions at the factories of its Chinese suppliers follows just the kind of careful, lawyer-scrutinized language we'd expect from a big multinational. It repeats the manufacturer's earlier insistence that no children have been employed, while at the same time admitting that there have been "several instances of inadequate practices at the facilities" concerning workers being made to do too much overtime, not being given proper contracts, and being fined if they turn up late or are absent -- issues which had already been revealed at one supplier, and which Samsung promises to fix by the end of 2014.

Burrow further into the document, however, and Samsung's list of promised "corrective actions" implies that its internal investigation has uncovered evidence of other serious problems. These include "physical and verbal abuse," sexual harassment, a lack of first-aid equipment and inadequate safety training. Some information is also conspicuous by its absence -- at least in the short report linked below -- including clarity on how widespread any of these failings were among the 109 companies (and 65,000 employees) that have now been audited. Did they crop up at just a handful of factories, or were they endemic across China? We have no idea, but given how much data Samsung has now dutifully amassed, it surely does. We've asked the company for more detail and will update if we hear back.

(AP) ? During a year with a monster storm and scorching heat waves, Americans have experienced the kind of freakish weather that many scientists say will occur more often on a warming planet.

And as a re-elected president talks about global warming again, climate activists are cautiously optimistic that the U.S. will be more than a disinterested bystander when the U.N. climate talks resume Monday with a two-week conference in Qatar.

"I think there will be expectations from countries to hear a new voice from the United States," said Jennifer Morgan, director of the climate and energy program at the World Resources Institute in Washington.

The climate officials and environment ministers meeting in the Qatari capital of Doha will not come up with an answer to the global temperature rise that is already melting Arctic sea ice and permafrost, raising and acidifying the seas, and shifting rainfall patterns, which has an impact on floods and droughts.

They will focus on side issues, like extending the Kyoto protocol ? an expiring emissions pact with a dwindling number of members ? and ramping up climate financing for poor nations.

They will also try to structure the talks for a new global climate deal that is supposed to be adopted in 2015, a process in which American leadership is considered crucial.

Many were disappointed that Obama didn't put more emphasis on climate change during his first term. He took some steps to rein in emissions of heat-trapping gases, such as sharply increasing fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks. But a climate bill that would have capped U.S. emissions stalled in the Senate.

"We need the U.S. to engage even more," European Union Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard told The Associated Press. "Because that can change the dynamic of the talks."

The world tried to move forward without the U.S. after the Bush Administration abandoned the Kyoto Protocol, a 1997 pact limiting greenhouse emissions from industrialized nations. As that agreement expires this year, the climate curves are still pointing in the wrong direction.

The concentration of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil, according to a U.N. report released this week. And each year, the gap between what researchers say must be done to reverse this trend, and what's actually being done, gets wider.

Bridging that gap, through clean technology and renewable energy, is not just up to the U.S., but to countries like India and China, whose carbon emissions are growing the fastest as their economies expand.

But Obama raised hopes of a more robust U.S. role in the talks when he called for a national "conversation" on climate change after winning re-election. The issue had been virtually absent in the presidential campaigning until Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast.

The president still faces domestic political constraints, and there's little hope of the U.S. increasing its voluntary pledge in the U.N. talks of cutting emissions by 17 percent by 2020, compared to 2005 levels.

Still, just a signal that Washington has faith in the international process would go a long way, analysts said.

"The perception of many negotiators and countries is that the U.S. is not really interested in increasing action on climate change in general," said Bill Hare, senior scientist at Climate Analytics, a non-profit organization based in Berlin.

For example, Hare said, the U.S. could stop "talking down" the stated goal of the U.N. talks to keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees C (3.6 F) compared to pre-industrial levels.

Todd Stern, the U.S. special envoy on climate change, caused alarm among climate activists in August when he said that "insisting on a structure that would guarantee such a goal will only lead to deadlock." He later clarified that the U.S. still supports the 2-degree target, but favors a more flexible way to reach it than dividing up carbon rights to the atmosphere.

Countries adopted the 2-degree target in 2009, reasoning that a warming world is a dangerous world, with flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, and the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

A recent World Bank report found the world is on track toward 4 degrees C (6.2 F) of warming, which would entail "extreme heat-waves, declining global food stocks, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, and life-threatening sea level rise."

The U.S., alone among industrialized countries, didn't ratify the Kyoto Protocol because it found it unfair that China and other emerging economies, as developing countries, were not covered by any binding emissions targets. The U.S. and other rich countries say that firewall must be removed as the talks enter a new phase aimed at adopting a new climate treaty by 2015 that applies to all countries.

China ? now the world's top carbon emitter ? wants to keep a clear dividing line between developed and developing countries, noting that historically, the former bear the brunt of the responsibility for man-made climate change.

The issue is unlikely to be resolved in Doha, where talks will focus on extending Kyoto as a stopgap measure while negotiators work on the wider deal, which would take effect in 2020.

The 27-nation EU, Switzerland, Norway and Australia are on board but New Zealand, Canada and Japan don't want to be part of a second commitment period of Kyoto. That means the extended treaty would cover only about 15 percent of global emissions.

Delegates in Doha will also try to finalize the rules of the Green Climate Fund, which is supposed to raise $100 billion a year by 2020. Financed by richer nations, the fund would support poorer nations in converting to cleaner energy sources and in adapting to a shifting climate that may damage people's health, agriculture and economies in general.

In addition, countries need to agree on a work plan to guide the negotiations on a new treaty. Without a timeframe with clear mileposts, there's a risk of a repeat in 2015 of the hyped-up but ultimately disappointing climate summit in Copenhagen in 2009.

Judging by previous conferences, the negotiations in Doha will ebb and flow, with progress one day being replaced by bitter discord the next. And in the end, after an all-night session, bleary-eyed delegates will emerge with some kind of face-saving "accord" or "action plan" that keeps the talks alive another year, but does little to address the core problem.

"It shows that leaders and also the public in these countries ? the U.S. certainly is one of them ? don't yet understand the full implications of the costs associated with the path that we're on," said Alden Meyer, of the U.S.-based Union of Concerned Scientists.

Pre-Fabricated Solar Carports for Private and Commercial Use - TRCB

Solar panels or solar trackers are considered as a complete package where the photovoltaic cells are connected together. You can use solar panel as a component of a larger photovoltaic system in order to generate and supply electricity in commercial as well as residential applications. Each of these panels is rated by its own DC output power under standard test conditions. They typically range from 100 to 320 watts. Actually a single solar panel can only produce a limited amount of power. This is the reason why most of the modern illustrations contain multiple panels.

Photovoltaic racking system generally includes several solar panels, an inverter, and a solar battery or solar tracker. Apart from that, there are interconnected wirings. A typical solar panel uses the following technology:

Generally the solar panels use light energy or photons from the sunlight in order to generate electricity by using the photovoltaic effect. Most of the systems use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells based on cadmium or silicon. In order to protect the cells from mechanical damage and moisture, there is a structural module either at the top or the back layer. Traditionally, most of the cells are rigid. However, during these days semi-flexible solar cells are also available.

All the electrical connections in such solar trackers are generally made in a series in order to achieve a desired voltage and/or in a parallel to provide a desired current capability. The conducting wires that take the current off the panels may literally contain silver, copper, or the other non-magnetic conductive transition metals. It is really important that all the cells are connected electronically to one another and to the rest of the system.

Solar Carports are widely used and it is really popular among the users. Solar carports with electric vehicle chargers provide you with a new opportunity. It can be a great solution for the private lots to large commercial spaces.

A complete solar carports package includes the following:

? PV Modules

? Carport Structures

? Solar Inverters

? Chargers

? Combined Boxes

? Safety Switches

? Lightning Panels

? System Designs

These unique solar energy systems provide you with huge opportunities. The most important advantage it provides is that it reduces energy bills for building owners. It also increases the revenue opportunity from the sale of solar renewable energy credits (SREC) to the brokers.

Apart from this, there are many other components used in solar panels. Some of the components include the following:

Solar Trackers: These are used to increase the amount of energy produced per panel at a minimum cost of mechanical complexity and need for maintenance. They actually sense the direction of the sun.

Fixed Racks: The fixed racks generally hold the panels stationary as the sun moves across the sky. The operator needs to set these racks according to the angle at which the panel is held.

Ground Mounted: They are another solar power system that consists of solar panels held in place by the racks as well as frames attached to the ground based mounting supports.

?

Orion Solar Racking specializes in the development, manufacturing and marketing of photovoltaic racking, solar carports, roof mount, ground mount solutions and provides all types of solar panels for residential, agriculture, industrial, government, commercial and utility grade projects. Our mission is to promote renewable energy solutions and making solar trackers installation simple.

Should I try that game on a console? - moving to the couch ...

Lately I've been considering playing some games on console.

Mostly so I can get away from the PC where I work during the day. I posted this specifically in Dragon Age Origins Catch All, but then I realized there were a few titles that I was considering.

Looking for opinions from PC, mouse and keyboard gamers, on how some titles translate to console. Specifically PS3 for me.

Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect 2, and 3

For some reason I've always wanted to try WoW sitting on the couch with a gamepad. I don't know why the console is where MMOs go to die. Because of chat?

There are some games that I will not likely try on console. Something like skyrim where I can mod and crank up eye candy settings. Mod heavy games. etc.

Most Common Outsourcing Problems and How to Avoid Them

Posted on by admin

As with any organization, business outsourcing has its own share of challenges. With proper planning, common problems and issues may be avoided. In today?s article I will discuss the common mistakes businesses commit when outsourcing and how to avoid these pitfalls.

?
Outsourcing core functions
?

Not all tasks are ideal for outsourcing. Certain job functions like administrative and IT functions, when managed by an outsourcing partner, can give you more time to focus on areas that require your specialization. Unfortunately, some companies forget that not all tasks are ideal for outsourcing. They no longer take the time to sit down and extensively study their existing business framework, and often end up outsourcing critical processes which leads to catastrophic outcomes.

?
Poorly written contracts
?

Before you sign an agreement, make sure that you get the littlest details covered. An outsourcing agency may, at any time, experience an internal problem that will prevent them from finishing the tasks assigned to them. If ever they completed the project, but delivered poorly on quality, then you should at least include a detailed refund policy in the contract. Always Plan for an exit strategy, consider all the ?what ifs? and be sure that your contract can protect your business from these sudden setbacks.

?
Choosing the wrong outsourcing provider
?

Don?t just depend on the catchy advertisements, surprisingly affordable services, and other claims that an agency provides just so they can close a deal with you. Before you get an outsourcing partner, shortlist at least five companies. Compare their services and the range of benefits they offer. Take a look at their client portfolio, the projects they?ve handled, their culture, and values system among others. Do your own research. Spending a little more time in choosing the right outsourcing partner for your business can save you a lot of troubles in the future.

?
Lack of communication
?

Time and distance are only two of the many barriers that can affect a communication process. Often, vital information can still get lost even with daily verbal consultations. Make sure you follow up every discussion with an email or any form of written correspondence. This allows concerned parties to clear any ambiguous details during the discussion, and ensures that everyone involved in the project knows what is expected of them.

?
Not anticipating unforeseen costs
?

Unforeseen costs may include fees for prolonged trainings during the transition period and extended project timelines. There may also be instances where you might need to add more services than you previously planned. It?s important that you discuss your budget with your chosen outsourcing partner. Together, make realistic projections on overall estimated cost and allot a contingency fund for unexpected expenditure.

?

Outsourcing brings with it many awesome benefits. It also introduces many adjustments vital to a growing organization. As a business owner, you have to be ready to embrace change and have the foresight to anticipate these challenges. Keep these suggestions in mind and it just might help you increase your success in outsourcing.

(AP) ? Tim Hardaway Jr. brought the ball up the court, then dribbled between his legs and headed to the left. Then he flashed back to his right, rose up and knocked down a midrange jumper.

The crowd at Madison Square Garden gasped at the crossover, which was reminiscent of his famous father's most memorable move. Michigan fans jumped up and cheered. Kansas State coach Bruce Weber called timeout, but it didn't work.

Hardaway scored 23 points to power No. 4 Michigan to a 71-57 victory over the Wildcats in the final of the NIT Season Tipoff on Friday night.

Glenn Robinson III had 12 rebounds, and Trey Burke and Jon Horford had 10 points apiece for the Wolverines. Hardaway made 10 of 15 shots from the field before he was kneed in the head with less than four minutes left. He returned to the bench in time to celebrate with the rest of his team and collect the tournament MVP award.

"This is what he works for. He works hard at not just being a shooter but to have an in-between game, be a rebounder," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "The biggest thing is his work ethic. That just doesn't happen. He's got great DNA, but DNA doesn't get you there alone."

Hardaway wasn't available to talk to reporters, but Michigan trainer John DoRosario said the junior passed his concussion tests and was cleared to fly home. The Wolverines' next game is Tuesday against No. 16 North Carolina State.

Rodney McGruder had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Angel Rodriguez scored 10 for Kansas State (5-1).

Michigan (5-0) won the tournament, previously known as the Preseason NIT, for the first time. It was the Wolverines' first title in a significant preseason tournament since the 1997-98 season, when they beat Syracuse to capture the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic.

"Those who stay will be champions," Beilein said, citing the aphorism of former football coach Bo Schembechler. "So whenever we have a chance to do something like this, we embrace it and go for it like there's no other games in the season."

Speaking of football: Although this appears to be one of Michigan's best basketball teams since the Fab Five era, fans at the Garden chanted "Beat Ohio!," looking ahead to Saturday's football game against the archrival Buckeyes.

The Wolverines struggled at the end of the first half against Kansas State while Trey Burke and Jordan Morgan sat on the bench in foul trouble. But Hardaway took over after the break.

"I knew we were going to come out in the second half and make adjustments," Burke said. "I knew that Tim was the hot hand, and they were playing and waiting for me to get to the lane."

Hardaway made four baskets in the first eight minutes as Michigan got out to a 49-30 lead. His crossover, on which he juked Kansas State's Will Spradling far out of position, made it 43-27, and Michigan kept up the pressure, taking a 21-point lead with a little over 10 minutes to play.

From there, it was mostly a formality.

In its semifinal, Kansas State overcame a pesky Delaware team that should contend in the Colonial Athletic Association, but Michigan was several notches above the Blue Hens and the Wildcats didn't have much of an answer. They got off to a slow start in each half, and spent most of their effort trying to chip away at Michigan's lead.

"We spotted them six to start and spotted them eight or so the second half and that's the game and you're just playing catch-up," Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said..

Michigan had a 10-point advantage midway through the first half, but gave some of it back after Morgan and Burke each got two fouls. The Wildcats were outshot 48 percent to 29 percent in the half, but only trailed by five at 29-24.

The Wildcats should be favored in their next four games before they face No. 7 Florida on Dec. 22. They open the Big 12 season Jan. 5 against Oklahoma State.

Michigan's road isn't as easy ? the Wolfpack come to Ann Arbor on Tuesday, and Michigan returns to New York on Dec. 15 for a game against West Virginia at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

"We got to go prove it again," Beilein said. "The season is a marathon. This is maybe the first 400 yards or something of that marathon, but we ran it well."

Guide to Payday Loans: Should You Go For One?

Payday loans are short-term unsecured loans lent against the ?next paycheck? of an individual. By bypassing the credit check procedure, payday loans are a lot easier to score, but also come with instant repayment terms. All you need to qualify for a payday loan is a steady job that guarantees your income for the next few weeks or months. Payday loans are targeted at unprecedented expenses like medical emergencies, and should not be confused with consumer finance. Owing to their increasing popularity, payday loans have garnered much attention in the media, but it is important to learn all the facts before you form an opinion.

What People Are Saying About Payday Loans vs. the Truth

A simple Google search will tell you that payday loans are the center of much contention in the media. Stories of people will thousands of pounds of debt, interest swindlers, and fraud payday companies have spread like wildfire. While these stories are factually correct, they frame payday loans in a negative light in order to create sensation. Payday loans are not harmful ? as long as you remain responsible.

With a payday loan, as with any form of easy money, there is always the alluring risk of biting off more than you can chew. If you start treating payday loans as means to shop, party, pay bills or spend unnecessarily, you are inviting a miasma of recurring debt. Interest rates can be as high as 400% a year! So, obviously, these loans aren?t meant to be taken out for a year at all. The mantra is simple ? take a payday loan only IF you can repay it on your next payday! Newspapers aren?t lying. Payday traps are genuinely out there, but you can avoid them if plan your finances wisely.

Old v. New Methods of Payday Lending
Payday loans have come under the limelight lately because the entire process has been digitized and loans are now provided through websites. This has widened the reach of payday loans multifold and the application is a lot more convenient for loan seekers. Instead of visiting payday lender outlets, applicants send all their documents via email or fax, and are explained the terms of agreement online. In turn, they receive the money via direct deposit and have multiple methods of returning it too. This is comforting for lenders too, as they can set up an electronic withdrawal of funds from the debtor?s account on his/her payday.

Can anyone crack the pigeon's wartime code?

LONDON (Reuters) - A World War Two code found strapped to the leg of a dead pigeon stuck in a chimney for the last 70 years may never be broken, a British intelligence agency said on Friday.

The bird was found by a man in Surrey, southern England while he was cleaning out a disused fireplace at his home earlier this month.

The message, a series of 27 groups of five letters each, was inside a red canister attached to the pigeon's leg bone and has stumped code-breakers from Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), Britain's main electronic intelligence-gathering agency.

"Without access to the relevant codebooks and details of any additional encryption used, it will remain impossible to decrypt," a GCHQ spokesman said.

The message is consistent with the use of code books to translate messages which were then encrypted, according to GCHQ, one of Britain's three intelligence agencies.

However without knowing who the sender, "Sjt W Stot", is or the intended destination, given as "X02", it is extremely difficult to decipher the code, GCHQ said.

Although the code books and encryption systems used should have been destroyed, there is a small chance that one exists somewhere.

A spokesman for GCHQ said it was "disappointing" that the message brought back by a "brave" carrier pigeon cannot be read.

He added: "It is a tribute to the skills of the wartime code-makers that, despite working under severe pressure, they devised a code that was undecipherable both then and now."

The Curator of the Pigeon Museum at Bletchley Park, north of London, Britain's main code-breaking centre during World War Two, is also trying to trace the identity numbers of the pigeon found in the message, according to GCHQ.

Pigeons were used extensively in the war to carry vital information to Britain from mainland Europe. Flying at speeds of up to 80 km per hour, they can travel distances of up to 1,000 km but were vulnerable to hungry hawks and bored soldiers who used to take pot-shots at them as they flew overhead.

Google Maps Is Now Giving Out Profile Badges To The Most Helpful Community Members

Google Map MakerOne of the really interesting things about Google Maps is that there's a huge, thriving community of people who love to help make the product better. Basically, when a road closes, or something is incorrect, there are tools via Map Maker that let them report it. It involves the community in ways that serve both sides of the fence. Today, the Google Maps team has announce a bit of a "reward" system for those who help out a lot. It wants to reward accomplishments that are met by members of the community and I happen to think that it's a great program. It's kind of live giving cash rewards out to hackers who find holes in its products.

Teams taking closer look at secondary market

CHICAGO (AP) ? Chipper Jones was down to the final few games of his distinguished career when the Atlanta Braves opened a series at Pittsburgh last month. The Pirates, who play in one of the majors' most picturesque ballparks, were closing out their best season in 15 years.

And a few hours before Michael Bourn stepped into the batter's box for Jeff Locke's first pitch, there were 23 tickets listed on StubHub.com for 15 cents or less.

There were lots more bargains on that Oct. 1 slate of games. Two seats at Wrigley Field were available for six quarters, but you had to watch the Chicago Cubs take on the lowly Houston Astros. Miami's new ballpark had 881 tickets listed on StubHub for less than $5 apiece.

"For baseball games, it has been great because I spend a lot less money than I would if I was buying the tickets from Cubs.com," said Josh Shpayher, an attorney from Skokie who recalled paying more in taxes and fees than he spent on four tickets in one purchase on the website.

Such bargains have been a joy to fans but are drawing increased attention from sports teams concerned about the effect of the cheap tickets on their ability to sell their remaining inventory. It could mean subtle changes that impact how fans get into their favorite stadiums, ballparks and arenas across the country.

Major League Baseball Advanced Media and StubHub are in negotiations over the website's role as the official secondary ticket market for MLB after their first deal expired following this season. The NBA partnered with Ticketmaster to create a website which went live last month and is both a primary and secondary ticket outlet.

"The secondary market isn't going away," Minnesota Twins President Dave St. Peter said. "It's always going to be a significant part of the ticket procurement process and an option for fans. As we focus on the primary market, we also have to look for ways to make sure the secondary market will not be a hindrance to the primary market."

Baseball's agreement with StubHub essentially means the website provides a secondary online platform for any team that wants one. Both sides seem to want to continue the partnership, but have yet to announce a new deal. One of StubHub's central tenets is a free market, with no ceilings and floors, and baseball could be pushing for more control over ticket prices, possibly complicating the discussions between the sides.

Matthew Gould, a spokesman for MLBAM, said talks are ongoing and detailed some of the positives of the partnership to date.

"We have seen benefits," he said Tuesday. "While some of those are economic, the most important benefits have come from the amount of data that we have been able to have both on the buying and selling side, which will be very important as we formulate our future plans for the secondary ticket market."

Joellen Ferrer, a spokeswoman for the website, declined to comment when asked about the status of the negotiations. She also declined to comment when asked about the San Francisco-based company's relationship with Major League Baseball.

"It's been talked about, some type of a floor," St. Peter said. "Whether that will be a reality, I don't know. Some of the timings of offerings as well, maybe establish a window by which offerings for game tickets at certain levels are taken down. A lot of this is a promotional issue."

"We don't have a relationship with Ticketmaster because Major League Baseball's preferred ticketing method is through tickets.com, which it owns. So we wouldn't likely do a deal with Ticketmaster. We'd be more likely do a deal with StubHub."

StubHub struck one of its first major sports deals with the Seattle Mariners in 2001 and has separate partnership agreements with about half of the 30 major league teams, covering everything from signage to promotions. It signed a five-year deal to become the "Official Fan to Fan Ticket Marketplace" for MLB.com in 2007.

John Davis, the vice president for ticket sales for the Cincinnati Reds, said the relationship with StubHub "provides valuable insight and data into the secondary market that we wouldn't have otherwise."

"Teams are provided a clear picture as to nuances of the secondary buyer by pricing categories, proximity to the ballpark, and timing in regards to time of purchase and the actual game," Davis said. "All these factors are extremely helpful in understanding our fan base, how best to message to them, and how to properly price our tickets."

Any new deal between the sides could have a much different feel without one of baseball's most popular franchises.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the New York Yankees are planning to opt out if baseball signs another deal with StubHub. The person said the Yankees would announce their own arrangement at some point soon.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing contract negotiations.

The Yankees groused about StubHub when they had some empty seats for some of their home games in the playoffs. The actual effect of their absence from any new arrangement is uncertain, since fans still would be able to buy and sell Yankees tickets on the site ? the consumer may not notice much of a difference.

StubHub.com declined to release team-specific ticket sales, but acknowledged the big-market clubs generate the most business.

The NBA announced its partnership with Ticketmaster in August, and they opened their new website before the season started. Billed as the official ticket marketplace for the league, NBATickets.com provides access to tickets sold by the team and by other fans. The league says teams can set minimum ticket prices on the site.

"I think that you're going to see it move more toward where the NBA is," said Bill Sutton, who is the director of the sport and entertainment management program at the University of South Florida and spent four years as the NBA's vice president for team marketing and business operations, "where it's going to be instead of rivals you've got to be partners, because neither seller is going away, so you've got to figure out a way to partner."
