Alain Ducasse and Lee Schrager

I had the immense pleasure of interviewing Mr. Lee Brian Schrager recently in anticipation of the upcoming South Beach Wine & Food Festival? (SOBEWFF), taking place for its eleventh consecutive year on February 23 to 26, 2012. The Festival is held at some of the most exciting venues in Miami Beach, and over forty unique events will take place during the fourday Festival. Each event has a theme, a particular food or wine concept, and collectively they offer a global perspective on the amazing palates of food and wine.

Schrager, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, is Vice President of Corporate Communications and National Events at Southern Wine & Spirits of America, and Founder and Director of the Festival. He is delightful, passionate and a true visionary. The Festival began as a oneday event and garnered a respectable 7,000 guests. In ten years, the prestigious Festival has grown in scope, size and sophistication. The event has become ?de rigueur? for food and wine aficionados worldwide, last year attracting over 57,000 guests, top chefs, and nearly everyone from the ?who?s who? of the culinary and wine world. The events range from large tasting formats to intimate, themed affairs to targeted seminars. Each event represents the best of its respective category ? from gourmet foods to grilled cheese.

This Festival is extremely important for the economy of Miami Beach ? vastly benefiting the revenues and brand awareness of its many participating restaurants, hotels, markets, food and beverage companies and the many ancillary companies connected to the event.

It is also extremely successful and impressive in fundraising. At the close of last year?s Festival, approximately $14 million has been raised for Florida International University?s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CSHTM). The Festival is produced by Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida in conjunction with the CSHTM, and this partnership is a great example of ?win-win.?

To execute an event of this magnitude, it requires precise preparation and exacting logistics. Schrager and his team are assisted by over 1,000 students from the CSHTM, and, according to him, over two-thirds of his staff are recruited from this school.

The students have the opportunity to experience one of the premier Festivals in the country, and apply this invaluable experience to their education. All the while, the level of excellence of the CSHTM students? performance is honed by working side by side with the Schrager team, whose requisite level of expertise is exceptional to produce such a prestigious and successful affair.

In addition to the event planning aspects of the Festival, the CSHTM culinary students receive the rare opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the most celebrated chefs in the world. As Schrager noted, one of the keys to the growing success of the Festival is the heightened consumer appreciation of food and wine, and popularity of chefs ? with the explosion of cooking shows and visibility of chefs and restaurateurs. Powering pacemakers with heartbeat vibrations

Though pacemakers require only small amounts of energy (about 1 millionth of a Watt), their batteries have to be replaced periodically, which means multiple surgeries for patients. Researchers have searched for ways to prolong battery life ? trying to generate energy to power a pacemaker using blood sugar, or the motion of the hands and legs ? but these methods either interfere with metabolism or require a more drastic surgery, such as passing a wire from the limbs to the chest area. Aerospace engineers from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor have developed a prototype device that could power a pacemaker using a source that is surprisingly close to the heart of the matter: vibrations in the chest cavity that are due mainly to heartbeats.

The authors describe the technique and their progress developing it in a paper recently published in the AIP's Applied Physics Letters. In their method, vibrations in the chest cavity deform a layer of piezoelectric material, which is able to convert mechanical stress into electrical current. Tests indicate that the device could perform at heart rates from 7 to 700 beats per minute (well below and above the normal range), and that it could deliver eight times the energy required for a pacemaker. Furthermore, the authors write, the amount of energy generated is always larger than the amount required to run a pacemaker, regardless of heart rate. Though the team has yet to develop a prototype that is biocompatible, they say that the potential to package this energy harvester with pacemakers gives it an advantage over competing methods.

From the looks of it, the All-Pro defensive end is moving up in the world of high-end real estate, listing his Dallas-area home for a cool $2 million. It's not that surprising, considering the five-time Pro Bowler is the highest-paid Dallas Cowboy ever, signing a six-year, $78 million contract extension, $40 million of which was guaranteed. Ware's home is located in one of Dallas' finest gated communities and maxes out at a whopping 9,304-square. The manse features four living areas, numerous bonus rooms, a wine porch, seven fireplaces, a theater room, and chef's kitchen.

Carson Palmer (Cincinnati Bengals 2003-2011, Oakland Raiders 2011-present)

After an ongoing dispute between Palmer and Bengals president Mike Brown regarding Palmer's request to be traded, the team finally let go of the quarterback in October 2011. Now playing for the Oakland Raiders, the QB has moved out West, selling his Cincinnati home for $1.915 million. According to TMZ, Russell "allegedly failed to pay $195,512.05 in mortgage payments." In the midst of trying to settle his Oakland real estate mess, Russell is also looking for a job. He was released from the Raiders in May 2010 and is currently a free agent.

Jones moved into the 13,000-square foot mansion in his native Alabama after retiring from football in 2009, and last year he listed the massive estate for $3.5 million, which is currently still on the market. Former Giants defensive end Strahan is a NFL commentator for FOX NFL Sunday these days, but he made no bones about how he'd prefer to be with his old team on the field come Super Bowl Sunday. The seven-time Pro-Bowler retired in 2008 after the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, but he does have other business to attend to these days. That includes deals in the Los Angeles-area real estate market. His 9,200-square foot Brentwood estate recently hit the market with a $6.95 million price tag. Debt Relief | Greece: ECB Must Be Part Of Debt Relief | Freedom ...

ATHENS, Greece ? The European Central Bank and national central banks should be part of a debt relief deal with near-bankrupt Greece?s private sector creditors ahead of a pressing deadline early next week, the Greek Finance Minister said Thursday.

Evangelos Venizelos said the deal should also involve reducing the interest rates Greece pays its European partners and the International Monetary Fund for its first bailout agreed in May 2010.

The ECB and European central banks have so far been exempt from a cut in the value of their Greek debt portfolios, estimated at more than 50 billion ($65 billion), to the annoyance of private bondholders who face an overall loss of about 70 percent.

The agreement, Venizelos said, must be struck by Monday, when finance ministers from the 17 countries using the euro meet in Brussels ? although the date could be ?slightly adjusted.?

?One of the major outstanding issues that must be solved ? is to secure the terms of participation of the official sector, that is our European partners and the IMF ? in the effort to reduce the Greek public debt,? Venizelos said.

Venizelos told a meeting of Socialist party deputies that Greece?s target of reducing its crushing debt to sustainable levels by 2020 ?requires the completion of a parallel Official Sector Involvement? ? beyond the 100 billion writedown all but concluded with private bondholders.

He added: ?That means that the European Central Bank must be mobilized, that we must solve issues concerning national central banks, and we must resolve issues concerning the level of the interest rate? of the first, 110 billion ($144 billion) bailout that has been shielding Greece from bankruptcy for the past 20 months.

A European Union official said Greece needs about an extra 15 billion ($20 billion) to get its debt down to manageable levels, and the rest of the eurozone could have to make up the shortfall. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on n-tv television Thursday that he didn?t see the need for ?any extra contributions from the public sector; we?re carrying everything anyway.? He didn?t address the issue of the 15 billion funding gap.

Athens is locked in tough talks on two fronts to ensure that it remains solvent, dodging the very real threat of a disorderly default ? which could likely be followed by a Greek exit from the eurozone ? when a big bond issue matures late next month.

Group Cries Foul Over EPA Fracking Report (ContributorNetwork)

The Western Energy Alliance offered testimony on Wednesday before the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology's Subcommittee on Energy & Environment regarding the December Environmental Protection Agency draft report tying groundwater pollution in Pavillion, Wyo., to nearby hydraulic fracturing sites. Here are the details.

* According to Kathleen Sgamma, vice president of government and public affairs for Western Energy Alliance, in a news release said the EPA's data doesn't match the conclusions it released in its nonpeer reviewed draft report. Sgamma, who testified before the subcommittee, said hydraulic fracturing is vital to America's energy supply but that misinformation about the process has caused the public to fear it.

* Oil and natural gas producers are held to high regulatory standards that carry legal and financial responsibilities, Sgamma said. Sgamma called for better oversight of EPA science through a requirement that all agency studies be reviewed by credible third parties.

* Subcommittee Chairman Andy Harris said in his opening statement, available from the subcommittee's website, that the shale gas industry supported 600,000 jobs in 2010, making the industry "one of the few bright spots in our current economic climate." In Wyoming, he said oil and gas production supplies jobs to "tens of thousands of people" and added $2 billion in state and local revenues in 2010.

* According to a Dec. 8 news release that accompanied the EPA's draft report, investigation into Pavillion's groundwater began three years ago. The EPA constructed two deep monitoring wells to sample water in the aquifer that supplies water to the community and stated in its report that it found an indication that the groundwater contains compounds likely associated with gas production practices including hydraulic fracturing conducted by producer Encana nearby. EPA announced that it would be releasing the draft findings for public comment and submitting them to an independent scientific review panel.

* On Dec. 20, Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asking for a more cooperative scientific review and analysis of the groundwater quality in Pavillion. After that letter went unanswered, he sent another letter on Jan. 17, stating, "Both Wyoming and the EPA should have a common goal of unbiased, scientifically supportable finding open to the public. I believe providing answers and information, making these available to the public and peer review panel, and extending the comment period accordingly are the best ways to accomplish this."

* The EPA announced on Jan. 18 that it is inviting the public to nominate scientific experts to be peer reviewers of the draft report. Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 17. Jackson responded to Gov. Mead on Jan. 19, stating the EPA is a science-driven agency that takes its obligation to high standards of scientific integrity seriously. The EPA plans to convene a panel of five to seven experts, unaffiliated with the EPA and screened for conflicts of interest, to review the report, Jackson stated, adding she expects at least one person recommended by the state who meets selection criteria will be named to that panel.

Occupy protester's Twitter posts subpoenaed

NEW YORK?? Prosecutors have subpoenaed the Twitter records of an Occupy Wall Street protester who was arrested in October during a mass protest on the Brooklyn Bridge.

The January 26 subpoena from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office seeks "user information, including email address," along with three months' worth of tweets from @destructuremal, the Twitter handle for Malcolm Harris.

Harris, 23, a freelance writer and editor who lives in the New York borough of Brooklyn, said Tuesday that Twitter sent a copy of the subpoena to him on Monday. He posted it ? where else? ? on Twitter.

"When you get an email from Twitter Legal, you assume it's a phishing scam, trying to get your password," he said. "It turned out that it is a phishing scam, but it's from the prosecutors."

It is not clear what specific evidence prosecutors are after. But the subpoena is an example of posts on social media sites posing potential legal problems for authors.

Harris said his lawyer, Martin Stolar of the National Lawyers Guild, would file a motion to quash the subpoena. Twitter has agreed not to comply with the subpoena while Stolar prepares the motion, Harris said.

A spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney's office declined comment.

The subpoena seeks Harris' tweets from September 15 ? two days before the Occupy Wall Street movement began ? to December 15. Harris is not sure what tweets could be fodder for prosecutors; Twitter's interface does not allow him to review all of his old tweets.

Stolar was not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening.

A Twitter spokesman declined to comment on the case but confirmed that the San Francisco-based company's policy is "to notify users about law enforcement and governmental requests for their information, unless we are prevented by law from doing so," in order to protect users' rights.

Harris is one of hundreds of Occupy-related defendants whose cases are still winding their way through the court system. A special courtroom has been set up to handle more than 1,800 cases in New York, the vast majority involving misdemeanor charges.

He was charged with disorderly conduct and is due back in court on February 29. Like a number of Occupy protesters, he has vowed to take the case to trial rather than accept a deal from prosecutors.

The National Lawyers Guild is representing many of the arrested protesters.
